What happens when you attend a Magistrates Court

The purpose of this discussion is to give you guidance on what to expect if you have to appear before the Magistrates’ Courts.

You will have already received a summons or a charge sheet, which will contain the information about the date and time of your court appearance as well as the details of the allegation against you. You should make sure that you arrive before the time stated, as failure to do so will result in a separate offence. Once you arrive at the court you will have to go through a security procedure where you will be searched with a metal detector. You are permitted to take mobile phones into the court building; however you should ensure that is switched off inside the court room because it is an offence to record proceedings.

Upon arrival, you should look on the notice board to see which court room you will be appearing in. You should sign in with the usher who will be located outside the courtroom, and give them the name of your solicitor if you are represented.

If you are represented by RM Lawyers, then we will do our best to ensure that you appear in good time as we are aware of the stress and worry that you will be feeling. Unfortunately regardless of what time you attend the court, we cannot guarantee that you will be first in the list.
